Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
