RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
