European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
