Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
