Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Global terror listing and prosecution case
Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.
Trial details and cross-border allegations
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.
Regional context and organizational structure
Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.
Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
