A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Popularity Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting products of uncertain source.
Some experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to the social media company, the platform has taken down violative content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using the platform's built-in search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
Within moments of joining one community, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Item Details and Costs
Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with Royal Mail labels, stating to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Measures
A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly significant health risks”.
